Belated post to start the new year

It’s already something of a rough start. I’ve got a project queued up for a colleague in Troy that I haven’t started and don’t know if he even still wants finished; I’ve got a Christmas present still to make, a birthday gift yet to purchase; emails from my father I haven’t read proclaiming his confusion; a bad case of winter blues. On the bright side, there is so much more organization in my life than ever before. I have bills paid early and money growing in the bank. I’ve got new friends and old friends and things to do. I’ve got a wonderful home that’s keeping me warmer this year thanks to a repaired window in my bedroom. I’ve got my own car that handles just fine in the excess of snow we’ve already received.

I’ve tentatively started using Ravelry and while it hasn’t yet inspired me to get back on the needles, it is helping me feel a bit more confident about some of the projects I’ve been contemplating. It’s also nice to have all the details in one place (you know how I love the details). If you knit and I haven’t already friended you, get on it please.

Today I learned that Craig D’Andrea is playing up in Lewiston with Andy McKee and Antoine Dufour in early February, and am very excited about going. If anyone else wants to head up there for what promises to be a really beautiful and fun evening, let me know. There aren’t a lot of seats at The Maple Room so I want to get them soon. I just recently bought Craig’s debut album and it is fantastic. The whole fingerstyle guitar thing really caught on me last summer and I am starting to explore it a little more. Candyrat Records has an amazing roster worth checking out.

And one more thing: last night at work I cut my left ring finger rather seriously with a pair of scissors. Please, folks, increase your respect level for hinged double blades. [WS]

Beehive hat, finished

Christopher modeling his new hat

You more or less already saw the finished hat, but I am just so pleased with the little tag. Anyway, Chris was kind enough to take pictures for me, so you may head over to his Picasa gallery if you want to see the rest of them. [WS]

Project 1: Beehive hat for Christopher

Here it is, finally, a photo of my very first real project. This is just before it came off the needles.

Beehive hat

I think I was overly worried about spreading the decreases out toward the end and I really tightened it up quick, which makes the whole thing a little bit short when it’s off the head. Fortunately, the welting gives it a lot of vertical stretch and it fits perfectly on its owner. Give me a little time to get it all finished up and give it to the lad and I will try to get a photo of it being modeled. [WS]

Temperature

Just letting you know it’s snot-freezingly cold out there for the first time this winter.

I had a decent day in: after sleeping until 11 this morning, I knit for a time and watched Aeon Flux (the animated series, not the live-action movie). Errands and a shepherd’s pie, which was delicious, came later. Now, after a little technology assisted socializing, I’m going back to the hat. Pictures are coming soon, as it needs to be finished soon in order to make its flight to San Francisco with its new owner. I do and also do not look forward to finishing it, but, unlike Penelope, I am all too aware that my delaying the completion of this “shroud” will not put off the inevitable. [WS]

On knitting

Here are my thoughts: how relaxing, how mind-clearing, and the minutes and hours slip past unnoticed, my self freed from the tyranny of solitude despite my lonely state. The fabric takes form in the shape I describe and works its way out from the pins growing so slowly as to be unnoticeable at a glance but almost magical over time. I’m sure all beginning knitters feel this way. I feel a bit foolish telling of it. I am converted. I am in phase. Thank you, sheep. Thank you, women of old. [WS]
